We have now come to the fourth week of the Great Fast. How quickly time passes and we recollect that we have barely begun to struggle and perhaps have been negligent in fasting and prayer. Therefore the Holy Church brings our sinfulness to mind as on Wednesday evening we recite the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, perhaps the most vivid portrayal of our human condition and fallen state of mankind. We should let the words of the Canon find a dwelling place deep within our souls so that we might, at this last portion of the Fast, begin to seriously contemplate our need for repentance.
As a parish, we, like all parishes, are experiencing a difficult time. Perhaps the Lord did not find us worthy to peacefully struggle. Perhaps we would not have taken a careful look at ourselves. Or, perhaps, in His great wisdom has allowed these things so we are not troubled by the everyday life of business and work. Perhaps it is our opportunity to spend time together as a family and pray.
Due to our circumstances, we will not have public services this week. I would ask that each of us recite the Canon at home. For the following Sundays, we will have the clergy serve liturgy and make the Holy Mysteries available to those who wish to receive Holy Communion. We are limited to six people at a time for this on Sundays. Other times may be available by contacting either Fr. Alexis or Fr. Archpriest Michael. It is very painful for Fr. Michael and me to be constrained in this manner, but we have no choice. As time goes by, we will have a better idea of how to move forward. It is impossible at this time to make firm decisions.
The most important thing is that our parish continues with our spiritual life as normally as possible. We do not wish to be cavalier in our approach, and also we must always be cautious to never live in fear or panic. God will never abandon us regardless of what happens. There is no reason for an Orthodox Christian to fear anything. Yes, we must be wise and cautious, but we must not constantly watch the news and live on Facebook. In both there is much hysteria.
In keeping up our spiritual life of prayer and fasting, it is also good to read interesting articles. I have gathered a few facts about st. Mary of Egypt who is commemorated next Sunday as well as this week. These facts are very interesting especially as we prepare for her feast.

Do you know that animals and all nature serve the saints by doing the will of God?The lion, the king of beasts, with his forepaws dug a hole sufficient for the burial of the body of the venerable Mary of Egypt. Similarly, the lions served the monk Gerasim of Jordan, and in Russia the monk Seraphim of Sarov fed the bear with his hands. The bears also liked to visit St. Sergius of Radonezh.
Do you know what the Reverend Mary ate in the desert?It is known that she took only three small loaves with her to the desert. This meager supply was enough for the Reverend for several years! And then it was only the poor vegetation of the desert that served as food.
Do you know that Mary of Egypt, before she went into the desert, gave herself to the mother of God, calling Her her Surety?"Be my faithful Surety before Your Son that I will no longer defile my body with the impurity of fornication, but, having looked at the Tree of the Cross, I will renounce the world and its temptations and go where You, the Surety of my salvation, will lead me" (Hieromartyr Sergius Mechev).
Did you know that Saint Mary received communion only twice in her life?
The first time-just before leaving for the desert, in the Church of John the Baptist on the Jordan; the second time-before her death, Abba Zosima gave her communion, while to receive it, she went to the elder across the Jordan, as on earth.
Do you know at what age Maria went to the desert?When the monk went to the desert beyond the Jordan, she was 29 years old.
Did you know that Mary knew the Holy Scriptures by heart, even though she was illiterate and never had the text of Scripture with her?When Zosima heard that he remembered the words of the Scripture, from Moses and the prophets, and from the books of Psalms, he said to her: "have you studied, lady, the Psalms and other books?"When she heard this, she smiled and said to him:"Believe me, man, that I have not seen another person since I crossed the Jordan, except your face now, I have not seen any animals or any other animals, and I have never learned books, I have not even heard anyone else sing or read, but the Word of God, living and effective, itself teaches the mind of man."

"When he came to the monastery, he [Zosima], without hiding anything that he had seen and heard, told all the monks about the monk Mary. Everyone was surprised at the greatness of God and decided to honor the memory of the Saint with fear, faith and love and celebrate the day of her repose.”
Do you know why the Orthodox Church established in Lent to remember the life of the monk Mary of Egypt?We re-read the life of the Saint again and again every Great lent as an example to follow in abstinence and the fight against sin and passion. Many Holy ascetics were inspired by the example of this Holy wife, who bravely endured the feat of ascetic work.
Other facts about the venerable Mary of Egypt
– The venerable Mary was 76 years old when she met Abba Zosima. At the age of 12, she left home, lived a dissolute life for another 17 years, and then spent 47 years in penance in the desert. She was originally from Egypt, but left home for Alexandria.
– 17 of all the 47 years that the monk spent in the desert, she constantly " struggled with her mad passions, as with fierce animals." This struggle was cruel and unbearable, which could only be sustained with the great help of God.
– Orthodox thinker of the XIX century I. S. Aksakov wrote a poem based on the life of St. Mary of Egypt.
– "When you read the life of Mary of Egypt, you are convinced how much the teachings of the Holy fathers, at least in the presentation of John the ladder, truthfully depicts the human soul, and how much spiritual life in general is natural" (Hieromartyr Sergius Mechev).

Все удивлялись величию Божию и решили со страхом, верою и любовию почитать память преподобной и праздновать день ее преставления».

Мы снова и снова каждый Великий пост перечитываем житие преподобной как пример для подражания в воздержании и борьбе с грехом и страстями. Многие святые подвижники вдохновлялись примером этой святой жены, мужественно понесшей подвиг аскетического делания.
